When my spouse and I moved into our latest
home, we had many decisions to make in regards to how we wanted the outside of
our home to look. Sure, we picked the
paint colors, the type and size of our gates, and even what trees and shrubs we
wanted planted in our yard. One thing we
didn’t think about was how we wanted our driveway to look. Since the driveway
occupies a huge part of the front part of our home, I wish we had taken the
time to consider how big of an impression it would be to the look and feel of
our yard, not to mention the whole aspect of curb appeal. In this day and age, the standard driveway of
poured concrete is not the only option out there.
Whether you have a new home under
construction or are looking to spruce up your existing driveway, there are many
things to consider. First you have to
look at your budget, both upfront costs as well as long term costs. Some driveways have larger upfront costs, but
lower cost to maintain, such as pavers, and some are exactly the opposite, like
gravel. You also need to consider what
style of driveway will complement the look of your home as opposed to conflict
with it. Another thing to think about is
what materials work best in the area you are living in. You don’t want to use materials that are more
prone to erosion, like pea stones, if you live in area that has excessive
rainfall. Maintenance and durability of
the materials you are choosing are also an important factor. Once you take all of this into account, you
can make an informed decision and then move on to more important things, like who gets to park in the garage and who has to hang out on the new beautiful
driveway.
